In the mid-1880s, a little village began to take shape along Gravois Creek, just southwest of the St. Louis City limits. As immigrants came to the area, the land was divided into a patchwork quilt of truck farms. Before the village’s first church was built, before the first post office was established, before the first road was paved, the families of the village—named Affton for its first postmaster, George Aff—banded together to establish a public school. With that one move, the Affton community began a legacy of dedication to children and education that still thrives today, 150 years later. Affton has long provided a wonderful education and foundation, launching you and your friends into the world. We all remember teachers who were special influences on our lives—names like Brunette, Kuhn, Ahrens, Rogers and Rethwisch. You probably remember your days at Affton with great affection and warm memories. Honored with Distinction in Performance Awards three times in recent years by the Missouri Department of Education, the district of now 2.550 students has instituted several creative programs, such as Early Childhood Education; won championships and awards in all types of sports as well as in vocal, theatrical and band programs; and has established a rigorous college-prep curriculum. However, funds are a challenge for the district and many of its students. The Affton Education Foundation scholarship endowment seeks to meet this challenge, by providing teacher grants and college scholarships.
